The United States has more than a million people either in jail, or awaiting trial. We’ve overused incarceration so much we’ve succeeded in socializing a whole generation in going to jail. It has been said that in this country we have a second-class education system with a first class prison system. Even worse, when individuals get out of prison, they almost always have the same problems that got them into trouble in the first place. That’s why 80% end up right back in prison. And that is why incarceration doesn't work!
As a society we need to work hard at finding meaningful solutions that work in keeping our youth out of prison and we need to work equally hard at improving solutions that do work. Prisons and jails have become a significant destination for Black and Hispanic males. Statistics reveal that 45 percent of Black males and 51 percent of Hispanic males ages 15-24 will end up unemployed, incarcerated, or dead.
In an effort to address the increasing number of youth heading in the direction of a life involved in crime, prison, or death; we developed Prosperity NOT Prison. Through Prosperity NOT Prison we specifically target youth who are a part of the juvenile justice system, youth faced with academic challenges, on the brink of dropping out of school, or have dropped out of school.
The program is entrepreneurial based program designed with the goal of refocusing the minds of this specific group of youth from street life to an improved academic life, and ultimately onto a happy, healthy, prosperous life. Through the program youth are provided with individualized comprehensive assistance such as tutoring, mentoring, therapy, and a host of other synergistic support that will help them in becoming positive contributors in society.
After successfully completing the refocusing track, youth participants are then placed in the entrepreneurship education component to begin the development of their own business venture or work on teams supporting other youth business ventures. The entire program itself allows youth to earn money based on the completion of specific levels.
